High Katsi by our volunteer Rebecca Guys
High Katsi is a small, remote community in the mountains of Talamanca, Costa Rica. There are about 16 houses and about 80 people. I had the pleasure and priveledge to visit this community with other volunteers, Chiara Nardi, during the first part of May.
The purpose of the trip was to disperse medicines and vitamins to animals. I had been given a gift of friends of the family to spend during my internship here and chose to spend part of animals after talking to some people here on how it might be better used. In communities like High Katsi, where people and animals living in the vicinity, animal health is important. Healthy animals mean healthy people.
Thus, deliveries were collected in the vetrinarian in Bribri, our bags were full and we were … the adventure begin!
Life in Upper Katsi
Disclaimer: It's been a challenge to write this part of my experience, because life in the High Katsi is another reality. I grew up in a reality and a way of life on the planet. Katsi High is a different way of living in this world, going through daily life, experiencing nature. Not just say that one way is better than the other or the resolution instead. So please read the following, knowing that it is written through my lens and perspective of the world and I hope I can do some justice to what was an incredible experience.
Life in the High Katsi is peaceful, beautiful, serene and surrounded by nature. It's a hard life for residents and is not a consistent work for those who live there. Most of the work day is a matter of survival: in producing and cultivating their farms for their own consumption. harvest is not a source of income and savings, for most is the food source. In these times of food security issues, perhaps this kind of knowledge and production is one of the most sound. What is poverty? Who defines the development?
There is no electricity or running water. As someone who has grown in culture North America, with running water and electricity, which first assumed this would be a priority for people. Not so live without electricity. means that there is a peace that comes from not having neighbors loud music or television. People who talked to who have experienced what life is like with electricity said they preferred live without electricity.
I found the evening after the sun had set and the rooms were lighted with lamps and candles, became a time sacred day for me. People who speak softly in Bribri in the upstairs room where we had set our tents, watching fireflies outside, or learning of new words in Bribri. Everyone went to bed early, everyone woke up early. Chiara's best friend was the cock of the family, which was very punctual every morning 3:00 AMJ.
The source of water for all is the River. The river is for bathing, drinking, fishing, washing dishes, washing clothes …. As I mean, most of the houses are very close to the river, maybe five minutes on foot. In a particularly rainy, overcast day, I was grateful that the situation No running water was temporary. However, having said that, the novelty of this beautiful river does not disappear during my four days there. Beyond the novelty, however, are people who live here every day and is not a temporary situation. It is filled with economic challenges, education, nutrition, and limited access to the needs basic.
