I need to take a few trees and branches out.

you’ve noticed the habitat that isn’t ‘much’ to man is often the most useful for nature. what we overlook is not overlooked by all. the habitat should be preserved intact: of course the woodpeckers will sit on the dead branch, and probably dozens of other organisms will have use of the trees too. but if you MUST…
greenest way is to use no chain saw, chop it down the ‘old fashioned’ way with a hand saw. definitely practice safety for yourself, but also try to minimize the contact that the falling tree makes with other vegetation, so as to minimize injury to it.
can you leave the wood to rot? animals use this as well, and eventually the nutrients are returned to the soil. a ruffed grouse might thank you with a drum solo later this year, keep listening.
best to leave no trace: you may OWN the land, but keeping it intact PRESERVES it for future generations.
