Moss Green
Any suggestions on removing heavy green moss from outside concrete walkway?
I use bleach leaving it sit for approx. 15 minutes and it dose a super job but within a month it comes back again. I have added soap to the bleach with same results.

Don’t take this wrong way,,certainly not as any insult or such.
That comment is a sorta pet-peeve of mine,,,and is practically a Universal expression about Bleach & mold/mildew/fungus/algae killing.
“Bleach works GREAT,,My Grandma used it,my Mom used it,I used it all my life—-Everytime the STUFF COMES BACK,,,hit it with some bleach and it’s Gone in an instant!”
Think about that.
If Bleach worked so well,,,
Why’s the stuff keep coming back?
Something the Advertisers and marketting depts and even the EPA does NOT tell about Bleach,,,
is that BLEACH FEEDS MOLDS,ALGAES,etc
Those things need WATER to live,,,and will lie dormant for DECADES until their spores get Moisture.
Bleach leaves a Hygroscopic residue.
Meaning it Attracts Moisture from the air,,and leaves a sorta Damp Paste/Film on the Molds/Algaes.
Bleach kills the Chlorophyl,,,,NOT the Spores(seeds)
So Black,Green,Yellow turns WHITE or even nearly CLEAR,,,
and gives the Appearance of the Moss/Algae being “Dead”.
MOST types of such plants have a spore thats encased in a VERY Hard shell.
Almost like a Golf Ball.
Chlorine WONT penetrate that.
So Bleach cannot Kill the “Seeds” anyway.

If You want it PERMANENTLY gone,,,You need some stuff from a Swimming Pool Supplies place.
*Pool Acid>>>NASTY,DANGEROUS STUFF,and EXTEMELY POWERFUL
*****Get a Couple Boxes of Baking Soda as “First Aid” to Neutralize the Acid.
*****Get a pair of good fitting safety goggles.
*Pool “SHOCK” or “BURN OUT”>>. Extremely Hi Concentration of “Available Chlorine”.
(Bleach has so little Chlorine,,,it’s Almost drinkable)
*Algicide>>>usually a Copper Based chemical with a detergent “wetting agent”

>>Mix the SHOCK with some water and SCRUB the area to loosen the bulk of the algae
>>Dilute the Acid with water,,,and Scrub the area with the Acid,,,then let it sit a few minutes.
It EATS CONCRETE,,,,so it cannot stay in contact long,,,and Must be rinsed thouroughly
>Dilute some Algicide with water,,and scrub area with that—let it dry in-place

Home Depot,Walmart ,etc sell those type chemicals at a good discount.
They can be a bit pricey at a Pool Store.
However,,I’d recommend buying from a Pool store and asking questions about SAFE USEAGE and Application,etc
Most places are happy to help,,and can recommend specific brands,products,quantities,etc.

After You get it Really Dead & Gone,,,,
You can Maintain it by using Tylex Mold & Mildew Remover.
It’s about the safest,cheapest,easiest ,and Most Effective “common product” to use for Touch-Ups and Spot Kills on the algae.
Ok,,what I’ve just told You is Hard Core stuff,,,and involves some Serious and Dangerous PRO chemicals.
I dont fault ANYONE for NOT wanting to fool with it theirself.
One good option is to hire somebody to do it.
“PressureWashing” is almost futile,,as far as a PERMANENT fix.
Ask at some Swimming Pool Companies if they have a Service Guy who may want to do it as a “side job” after hours or on Day Off or whatever.
It’s worth the expense to have it Professionally Deal With and Permanently gone.
The stuff not only Looks bad,,,it can be Dangerous Slippery on Walkways especially.
And it ALWAYS eventually SPREADS.
It not only spreads from it’s own main patch,,,it sorta “hops” over to adjacent areas.

As an Interim Measure,,,and may be worth trying…..
Switch from Bleach to POOL SHOCK TREATMENT.
It’s a powder/granules,,,mix with water then use same as bleach.
But it’s Hyper Concentrated Chlorine,,,10~15~20X more Concentrated than Bleach’s Chlorine Content.
H-T-H Powdered/Granular Pool Chlorine is NOT very strong Chlorine.
Use actual SHOCK TREATMENT for Plaster/Concrete Pools

How To Make Your Own Moss Landscape Rock and Garden Statues
Moss can make some garden elements and even entire shady gardens look and feel aged and established. The trouble with garden moss though, is that sometimes it may not even grow at all on its own. And if it does, it could take a very long time to become established.
Here’s a way you can accelerate and establish a beautiful green moss cover over your garden rocks and concrete features. This method doesn’t work well on resin statues and artificial landscape rocks.
First stir a fist size clump of porcelain clay into 3 cups of water to form a thin paste. You can usually get porcelain clay from local hobby shops.
Then combine the clay mixture with one cup of undiluted fish emulsion and one cup of fresh, shredded moss. Fish emulsion is a plant fertilizer made from whole fish. It’s usually available at nurseries and garden centers.
Mix everything together and paint it on your rocks and concrete objects with a paint brush. Keep things in the garden slightly moist by misting and taking care not to wash the mixture off.
Remember that moss grows naturally in patches, likes the North side of objects, and takes readily to cracks and crevices.
Use this formula in shady gardens and in moist locations and you can most probably have moss on your garden statues and landscape rocks in a few weeks.
